The most severe possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by experts, including a blistering 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in sea levels. An alternative projection foresees a decline of 6C in temperatures following the shutdown of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact food production and energy needs.
Credible Events, Not Predictions
These consequences, certain ones are connected to climate tipping points, are viewed as unlikely but plausible. The team stated that these projections plugged a hole in planning that had left the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.
"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined are not forecasts, but they are credible," commented the lead researcher who oversaw the analysis. "The nation has been formulating policy in the absence of the frameworks to test against worst-case scenarios. We've now given policymakers what they need to get ready for environmental results they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."
A Range of Severe Conditions Projections
Another collection of worst-case scenarios sets out the potential extent of extreme weather between now and the year 2100. These suggest that thermometer readings could soar in some months by up to 6C above average, while rainfall could be triple normal levels.
The likelihood of the catastrophic events coming to pass could not be calculated due to unknown factors about what action will be taken to tackle climate change and how the climate system will behave. This analysis was compared to national security risk assessments or scenario planning for economic stability.
Key Scenario Highlights
- 4C Temperature Rise: Global temperatures exceeding 4C by 2100 could happen if international cooperation breaks down or if strong feedback loops like the Amazon basin perishing unleash its vast reserves of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heatwaves and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
- Atlantic Current Collapse: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is weakening and becoming unstable due to climate change. A complete failure beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and freshwater availability would be fundamentally reshaped," said Arnell.
- Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if polar ice in the Arctic and Antarctic disintegrate quickly, submerging seaside communities. Differing from the other scenarios, this possibility is already understood by infrastructure experts.
- Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is rapidly cleaned up. This paradoxical outcome occurs because pollution particles from burning coal scatter solar radiation from reaching the ground.
Building Resilience Against the Unthinkable
The severe models could be utilized in planning the development of critical national infrastructure, such as expanded cities, energy plants and urban drainage systems. Knowledge about these environmental threats could also speed the push to reduce fossil fuel emissions.
The study developed the severe projections using a mix of real-world events, digital projections and climate physics. The scenarios exclude broader worldwide issues like the devastation of food supplies and geopolitical instability.
The research was initiated as part of a government’s adaptation planning initiative. Previous assessments have warned that insufficient focus was being allocated to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
An independent advisory body has stated that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and assess the dangers for 4C. Previous adaptation plans have been labeled being "insufficient" by certain experts.
