New Year Partygoers Told to Bundle Up with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK
Meteorologists have indicated an icy start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This is in spite of advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be needed," stated the Met Office.
Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are due to be low, so extra layers vital, said forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Broad Weather Alerts for Friday
As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.
- Transport is expected to be disrupted.
- People have been urged to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.
Temperatures Set to Drop Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Advisories Activated
In addition, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities stated this meant the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
