A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
