Scream OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallon Favorites
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the exact moment he received the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie premiered, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now represented in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange shared scenario. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by earlier horror movies, also is on the table.
Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
