Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.
