Israelis have assembled across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed formal commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the agreement.

A prominent representative involved in the talks revealed that an late session of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.

The official said the morning session ended without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Future management of the region

Public Sentiment

In the city's public square that day, young Hagar - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place appears as home now and until all the hostages are released not a single person will be secure."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence recover," she added.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."

Surveys now consistently show that around the majority of Israelis prefer the hostilities to finish in return for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the site of Nova festival, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.

From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of that day in the west side district, sector and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.

"Once the night falls, the dread appears with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.

"We are afraid of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, especially my little child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."

Medical Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of six people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported additional victims had been transported. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south region, health workers stated.
