The Video Platform Provides The Community Control to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to reduce the amount of AI-made media appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the company announced that it currently hosts over 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a widespread rollout. This advancement comes amid a rise in AI content, driven by new AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that approximately 10% of the most rapidly expanding channels on a popular video site primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this content is considered mass-produced AI material, a term for inferior, mass-produced content that is often illogical or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we intend to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own choices,” commented a company executive.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok disclosed that there are presently 1.3 billion videos on its network identified as artificially created. In total, in excess of 100 million videos are submitted to the platform daily, making AI-generated material a minor part of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the level of artificial media they see by opening the topic control option in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the setting include news, style, aesthetics, and movement.

Platform Guidelines

Its policies require creators to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it prohibits dangerous AI impersonations of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be taken down under its community policies.

In addition, the platform will henceforth attach an AI-generated label to content created with its built-in AI features, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing artificial media. This step is aimed to stop users from trying to evade the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

The company is also launching a two million dollar educational fund for experts and organizations to produce informative material about using AI responsibly. This project will benefit charitable organizations focused on training computer science.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has defended its safety measures, during controversy over proposals to make redundant a large number of content moderators in the United Kingdom. TikTok is planning to reduce hundreds of positions in its trust and safety division in the UK capital, with labor groups and online safety experts voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive clarified that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content ahead of it has to be seen by people. TikTok stated a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content reviewed by human moderators over the past year due to the use of its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we additionally believe it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of harmful content as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us work at speed.”
