Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
