Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile New President.
After a definitive final ballot, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Victory
After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having earlier been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Platform Built On Security and Immigration
Noted for his staunch socially conservative views and admiration for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely built on promises to tackle increasing crime and radically curb immigration.
He consistently blamed foreigners, particularly the around 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His proposals envisioned controversial measures such as building detention centers, barriers, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the armed forces presence on the northern border.

Several analysts interpret Kast's victory as part of a wider right-wing wave in South America, following this year's electoral results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other analysts also describe it as a extension of the established rotation of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Solid Mandate
Despite his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are counted together.
This political landscape could complicate his agenda, such as a pledge to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a plan for which he has not provided concrete steps.
"There are many things about what a Kast presidency will operate that are uncertain because he has not said how he will do them," noted a political science expert.
The analyst added, "On economic policy, it is highly probable we will see spending cuts associated with the right. But where there is much less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse during the campaign."
